Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's insatiable urge for payback has quickly evolved into a methodical system. During the year since his election, the chief executive's fury and caprices have assumed the shape of official policies in ways reminiscent to past repressive systems. Justice department officials who resist his demands are immediately dismissed and substituted by loyalists. Opposing figures who question him face prosecution, trial and sanctions. Opponents have been designated under executive memoranda as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “against free markets”, and warned with legal action as “security threats”.

Federal Agencies Transformed

Every situation involving prosecution of Trump's enemies and protection for loyalists displays its own particular features. Yet, notwithstanding their specific form, they embody manifestations of what has developed as a calculated approach. These events are not coincidental. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice lawyers and law enforcement personnel, accompanied by his installation of supporters in key posts, started rapidly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been molded into a structure. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been remade into ideological agencies under the president's clear command to implement his directives. Unfairness has been made standard. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Management is preoccupied with targeting the President's perceived opponents than they are with defending our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The origin of this system has been revealed in the court filing of three previous top law enforcement executives filed in September in the judicial system in Washington against FBI director a senior appointee and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of payback against Plaintiffs for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to demonstrate sufficient devotion”. According to the filing that Brian Driscoll, the former interim leader, describes a conversation in which Patel “freely acknowledged the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

Driscoll had attempted to shield agency personnel from being terminated, the lawsuit states. The director told him that “they” – understood by the official to be the presidential administration and DoJ – had instructed him to remove all those who they considered as having worked on a legal probe against Trump. The filing continues: “The director stated that he had to fire the individuals his bosses told him to dismiss, because his ability to hold his own position relied on the dismissal of the officials who handled investigations involving the leader. He explained that there was nothing he or Driscoll could do to halt these or any other dismissals, because ‘the agency tried to place the leader in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When he advised him he was disregarding the FBI's own regulations, he allegedly said “he understood that and he knew the character of the swift terminations were probably unlawful”.

Extensive Consequences

Since the director's reported acknowledgment to the official, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been weakened and repurposed for Trump's revenge apparatus. Six of the FBI's senior executives were dismissed or forced out in the initial period of the presidency. Approximately thousands of legal professionals at DoJ have agreed to a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than several federal prosecutors, including those in the southern district of New York, resigned in objection over what they viewed as ideological pressure in withdrawing the legal action against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in as a trade for his cooperation with his ICE roundups of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages ethical violations, has been cut down to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been decimated: the majority of its personnel has departed. 33% of top officials at DoJ have quit. The section enforcing environmental law has lost half its supervisors.

Rewards and Punishments

Regarding the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, quit in dissent against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. A key figure, Trump's “immigration leader,” appeared as the enforcer with Adams on Fox News to state: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll be back in NYC.”. And, another figure, earlier the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who brokered the agreement, was granted an judicial position, a potential stepping stone to the highest court.

His exemption for crimes perpetrated while in government, granted by the remarkable ruling of the GOP-led on the supreme court, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the basis on which he stands to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been freed to authorize corruption. The consequence of the court judgment permeates his administration and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has escalated. Similar to Richard Nixon's administration lawyer the figure remarked about the Watergate
